Changing for the better

Most of the car carrier trailers and trucks in the Netherlands use Onboard, an application designed by RDC to help drivers receive the transportation assignment, drive to the damaged car, meet the driver in need of help and transfer the car to a repair garage. This application was designed with the developers in the center, and with less focus on the actual end users of the app: truck drivers. By analyzing each screen and seeing how a truck driver interacts with those screens, we found a simpler way to perform a task. By redesigning each page, we were able to decrease the user input and simplify the whole process.

Handover to the developers

A user-friendly and impressive design is not as useful if the code lags behind the design and if (front-end) developers cannot communicate properly with designers.

Therefore, I mostly use Zeplin App (like Invasion Inspect or Avocode) to create a detailed specification in CSS/SCSS and to hand over the visual assets to the team.

* Update 2022: Figma made a complete package for design, prototyping, and also communication with the developers, so Zeplin is not my choice of software anymore.

Interactions

Visual design is intertwined with interaction design and the different screens are not complete until the user interface, visual designs, and interactions are aligned with the scope of the product. The Onboard app was no exception, and this redesign project included a set of interactions for every moment when a driver was using the app.
